Secretary General Sindiso Ngwenya has sent congratulatory messages to the Presidents of Rwanda and Kenya on their re-election during their respective countries’ polls conducted on August 4th and 8th respectively.

In the congratulatory message to President of Rwanda, H.E Paul Kagame, the Secretary General expressed confidence on continued consolidation of stability and implementation of developmental programmes that have earned the president international praise and recognition.

“We are glad to see you re-elected for another term,” Mr. Ngwenya said. “Rwanda is an active Member State that has greatly supported the various programmes of COMESA. We look forward to your continued participation for the greater good of your country and indeed the region as a whole.”

He attributed President Kagame’s land slide victory and high voter turn out to his good track record in developing Rwanda.

In the message to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Secretary General noted that Kenya has always been a supporter and active participant in the various regional integration programmes. He added that Kenya is among the largest traders within the 19-member bloc.

He attributed President-elect Kenyatta’s win to his transformational programmes.

“Your Excellency’s track record in the transformation of your country’s infrastructure, such as the Standard Gauge Railway, implemented in record time, provision of computers for schools and expansion of electricity connections through the Last Mile project are just a few of your signature projects that has made your tenure stand out,” the letter read in part.

He said the two election, demonstrated the importance of democracy and peaceful elections to regional integration.

COMESA had deployed a short-term observer mission to the August 8, 2017 elections during which President Kenyatta was re-elected in what observers have described as credible, free, fair and largely peaceful election.

In Rwanda, COMESA had deployed a short-term electoral observer mission to the Presidential election in Rwanda.
