His Excellency Azali Assoumani was sworn in as the President of the Union of Comoros in a ceremony that took place on 26th May, 2016 at the Moroni National Stadium.

This followed peaceful Presidential Elections in April and May, this year out of which the Constitutional Court confirmed President Assoumani as the new Head of State for the next five years. The new President took the oath in the presence of the members of the Constitutional Court together with the three Vice Presidents for each Island.

Assistant Secretary General of COMESA Ambassador Nagla El Hussainy represented COMESA in the ceremony that was attended by various regional and international guests.

In his Inauguration speech, the President reaffirmed his commitment to peace, security and stability of the nation and sustainable development.

In a separate meeting with Amb. Nagla, the President reaffirmed his governments’ commitment to regional integration as spearheaded by the COMESA.

He said his country will continue supporting the various programmes that are being implemented in the COMESA region as a way of deepening integration.
