Nairobi, Thursday, August 3, 2017: COMESA begun training its election observers ahead of the Tuesday General Elections. The training is intended to inform the observers on the constitutional and legal frameworks of Kenya as read with relevant international and regional instruments. This includes the COMESA Guidelines on Election Observation and Article 6(h) of the COMESA Treaty that calls for “the promotion and sustenance of a democratic system of governance in each Member State”.
Fifteen observers representing 10 member States and COMESA Secretariat are participating in the two days training. Mission leader Dr. Simbi Mubako, a former Justice Minister for Zimbabwe launched the training in Nairobi. He said the ultimate objective of the mission was to help in consolidating democracy in Kenya.
The COMESA observers will be dispatched to some of the former provincial headquarters on Sunday 6 August 2017.
