Uganda reaffirms commitment to COMESA

The Government of Uganda has reaffirmed its support and commitment to the regional integration programmes being spearheaded by the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives of the Republic of Uganda Honourable Amelia Kyambadde reiterated her country’s strong dedication to COMESA on 29th February 2012 when she met COMESA Secretary General Mr Sindiso Ngwenya and senior management at the Secretariat in Lusaka, Zambia.

She added that Uganda is a founding member of COMESA and the country has continued to benefit from its membership to the 19 member regional trade bloc.

The Minister received briefings from Mr Ngwenya on the state of play of the COMESA programmes. He also talked about the COMESA Customs Union and the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Agreement.

Directors of the different divisions of COMESA met the Minister and briefed her on the detailed programmes which each division is undertaking.

Minister Kyambadde expressed satisfaction that the COMESA integration agenda is on the right track and pledged Uganda’s unwavering support to the organization.

COMESA is the first African Regional Economic Community to have launched a Free Trade Area in October 2000.
