On 23 April 2012, thousands of Malawians were joined by Heads of State and dignitaries from the COMESA region and beyond, to lay to rest President Bingu wa Mutharika who passed away on 05 April 2012.
Presidents Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Mwai Kibaki of Kenya and Armando Guebuza of Mozambique were among the Heads of State at Monday's funeral service in Blantyre, Malawi's commercial capital. President Bingu wa Mutharika, 78, was later buried at his Ndata Farm in a white mausoleum he had built for his first wife, Ethel, who died in 2007.
Mutharika had named the mausoleum "Maphumulo wa Bata," or "Peaceful Rest." COMESA Secretary-General, Mr Sindiso Ngwenya, attended the burial together with African Union Chairperson Dr Jean Ping.
