Bujumbura, Wednesday, September 28, 2016: President Pierre Nkurunzinza of Burundi says peace, security and stability in the region needs to be enhanced as it underpins the success of regional integration.

Speaking when he received the Secretary General of COMESA Sindiso Ngwenya in Bujumbura, the President said the ongoing mediation process by the East African Community mediator to bring about consensus among the different parties in Burundi was progressing well and the situation in the country has improved significantly.

“I look forward to support from other member States of COMESA,” the President said.

The president also decried the slow pace of domestication of decisions including funding of regional programs by Member States. He said there was need for member States to take ownership by funding not only the Secretariat but regional integration programs through the COMESA Fund.

The Secretary General was in Burundi to brief the President on the preparations for the forthcoming COMESA Summit that will take place in Madagascar on 18 and 19 October 2016. The Summit will bring together Heads of State and Government and representatives from the  19 COMESA Member States.

President Nkurunzinza said his country was ready to host COMESA Summit in 2017.
