COMESA has extolled the Government and people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for the seamless transition of power from former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to His Excellency Ato Abiy Ahmed. On 15th February 2018 Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn submitted his resignation as both Ethiopia’s prime minister and chairman of the country’s ruling coalition.
In his message to Prime Minister Ahmed, Secretary General Sindiso Ngwenya wished the new government well as they take Ethiopia to greater heights.
“The seamless transition of power from His Excellency Hailemariam Desalegn to yourself and the new administration is further evidence that the decentralized Federal System of Governance that Ethiopia has adopted has the ingredients of making Ethiopia harness its diversity for the benefit of its people, the COMESA region in particular and African Continent at large.”
Ethiopia has embarked on the Second Growth Transformation Plan (GTP II) whose objective is to make Ethiopia a middle-income county in the not too distant future. The GTP II is underpinned by a massive investment program in infrastructure and energy development, which are enablers to sustainable economic development and regional integration.
“Indeed, the developmental model espoused by Ethiopia is being emulated by other member States of COMESA because of its potential for the successful structural transformation of member States economies,” Mr Ngwenya added.
Ngwenya noted that Ethiopia is a partner in both the COMESA Free Trade Area and the Continental Free Trade Area, which was recently launched adding that “We look forward to benefit from your counsel in actualizing these important Agreements,” the message said.
