Lusaka, Monday, July 9, 2018: Delegations from 17 out of the 19 COMESA States are attending the 38th Intergovernmental Committee meeting that kicked off today in Lusaka, Zambia. The IC is the first in a series of COMESA Policy organs that will precede the 20th Heads of State and Government’s Summit on 18 – 19 July 2018.
Delegations in attendance include DR Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Libya, Kenya, Malawi, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The official opening ceremony of the meeting will be conducted, Tuesday July, 10, 2018 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Lusaka at 09.00 hrs.
The IC brings together Permanent or Principal Secretaries designated by each of the 19-Member States and is responsible for the development of programmes and action plans in all fields of co-operation except in the finance and monetary sector.
Prior to commencement of the meeting, Development partners that collaborate with COMESA addressed the delegates. They included, the European Union, The USA, France and the International Organization for Migration.
The IC will review reports on the implementation of regional integration programmes and make recommendations to the Council of Ministers that will meet on 14 – 15 July 2018.
