COMESA Sends Solidarity Message to Kenya After Terror Attack

Lusaka, Friday, January 18, 2019: The Chairperson of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has sent a message of condolences and solidarity to the President of the Republic of Kenya His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, Government, families and people of Kenya on the recent terror attacks in Nairobi in which more than 20 people were killed and several others injured.

In the message sent by Secretary General Ms Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe, Chairperson of the COMESA Authority His Excellency Rivo Rakotovao President a.i. of the Republic of Madagascar condemned the attack describing it as an unacceptable affront to all humanity. He has called on all COMESA Member States and the international community to continue supporting the Republic of Kenya in the fight against terrorism.

‘Your Excellency, during this difficult period, we reaffirm our solidarity with you personally, the Government and People of Kenya and our resolve in the fight against terrorism in all its forms and wherever it occurs in the region,’ the Statement reads in part.

COMESA has also commended the Kenyan security forces for taking instantaneous action to neutralize the attackers. Kenya plays a leading role in the region in combating terrorism as well as promoting peace and security in COMESA and on the wider African continent.

The message adds that as a building block of the African Union, COMESA remains resolute and united with the African Union and other regional Economic Communities in combating terrorism.
