Often referred to as the “Gender Champion” at the COMESA Secretariat, the Director of Gender and Social Affairs has over 26 years’ experience in a number of fields which include educationalist in the subject of English Literature, Research and Advocacy in Women’s Rights as well as Documentation.
Mrs. Hamusonde has over 26 years’ experience in development. She started as an Educationalist in Ministry of Education, Zambia in 1991. Thereafter, she joined the Zambia National Women’s Lobby as Head Research, Information and Documentation. After a stint with the Women’s Lobby, she became the Chief Executive Officer of Zambia Association for Research and Development (ZARD). ZARD is one of the Women’s Rights Research, Education and Advocacy organization. From ZARD, she joined Plan International as the Advisor Gender, Community Empowerment and Child Rights. From Plan International, she worked as the Women’s Justice and Empowerment Specialist at USAID/Zambia. After USAID, she joined COMESA in 2014.
The most recent work as the Director of Gender and Social Affairs is focused on Policy and Advocacy on Gender Equality, Women Empowerment and Social Development in the context of COMESA’s regional integration agenda. Among the publications Mrs Hamusonde has done are: Beyond Inequalities Women in Zambia; Beijing Plus 10 Shadow Report; Assessment of the Zambia Teenage Mothers’ Re-admission Policy.
