Zambia, Zimbabwe Take Lead in Joint Industrialisation Project

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Zambia and Permanent Representative to COMESA, Her Excellency Gertrude Takawira says her country and Zambia have taken the first step to start the implementation of the concept of joint industrialisation strategy enshrined under the COMESA industrial strategy.

The Industrialization strategy is for a ten-year period from 2017 to 2026. It aims at structural economic transformation for the creation of jobs and wealth in the region.

Speaking when she paid a courtesy call on the Secretary General, October 4, 2018, Ambassador Takawira said this it was necessary for the Secretariat to provide technical support during the preparation and implementation of the project.

“Zimbabwe and Zambia has established a joint Permanent Trade Commission which shall help spearhead the implementation of the trade and industrialisation projects between our two nations and we need your support in this regard,” Ambassador Takawira said.

She observed that the implementation of the joint industrialization project will result in massive job creation amongst the youths leading to poverty reduction in the two States.

“Zambia and Zimbabwe have successful joint projects such as the Kariba Power generation plant and the Chirundu One Stop Border Post and I am positive that with your support even this new project shall be a success,” she said.

Secretary General assured the Ambassador of technical support as well as sourcing of the funds to support the implementation.

“As COMESA this is very good news to know that two Member States are taking the lead in implementation joint projects because working together is better for integration,” Kapwepwe said.

She said COMESA shall support Member States following the decision of the COMESA Council of Ministers, which directed the Secretariat to develop an implementing strategy of the COMESA Industrial Policy, adopted by the same council in March 2015.

COMESA Ministers responsible for industry have adopted the regional Industrialization strategy, which defines key interventions at both regional and national levels to speed up industrial development in the region.
