The COMESA Elections Observer Team has set up a command center at the Secretariat in Lusaka ahead of the official deployment of observers to various parts of Zambia for the August 11, 2016 General elections.

The center will coordinate all election-related work including the management of the observer teams deployed in the field, receiving and documenting field reports. It will also provide space for receiving and interacting with other election observation missions and stakeholders.

The COMESA Elections Observer Team will be headed by Ambassador Ashraf Gamal Rashed from Egypt who arrived in Zambia, Wednesday, August 3, 2016. Thereafter, the team of observers will undergo two days of training in election observation. There will be sessions of interaction with various stakeholders who will brief the observers on the electoral process so far.

The COMESA Mission is composed of nominees from selected Member States with accredited embassies in Zambia, officials from Electoral Management Bodies of member States and from the East African Community as well as staff from the Secretariat.
COMESA has been involved in electoral processes, including observation of polls in Member States since 2006. This has been done upon invitation by the relevant Member States.
