AU-COMESA Election Observers’ Preliminary Statement on Egypt Presidential Elections

Cairo, Thursday, December 14, 2023:  The African Union – COMESA Joint Election Observers’ Mission to the presidential elections in Egypt have issued its preliminary statement. The statement outlines key findings and recommendations on the electoral process up to the closing and counting of the polls.

Dr. Speciosa Wandira Kazibwe, former Vice President of Uganda, and Ambassador John Kakonge, a member of the COMESA Committee of Elders, led the mission. They delivered the statement at a press conference in Cairo on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

The mission characterized the December 10–12 election as laying a solid foundation for consolidating peace and stability in Egypt.

“While the nation awaits the announcement of results by the National Elections Authority, the Mission urges all stakeholders to continue upholding peace throughout the remainder of the process,” emphasized the statement.

The mission comprised 70 observers from 36 AU/COMESA Member States.
