COMESA and Sweden held discussions focusing on advancing regional integration, facilitating trade, strengthening economic resilience and promoting sustainable and inclusive development within Eastern and Southern Africa.
Secretary General Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe and the Ambassador of Sweden to Zambia and COMESA, H.E. Johan Hallenborg met on 19 February 2026 at the Secretariat in Lusaka, Zambia.
The meeting provided an opportunity to gain deeper insights into how the cooperation can be strengthened and underscored the importance of safeguarding the multilateral system while upholding a rules-based international order. Discussions centered on advancing regional integration, facilitating trade, strengthening economic resilience, and promoting sustainable and inclusive development throughout Eastern and Southern Africa.
Amb. Hallenborg emphasized the critical role of free trade and regional economic integration as drivers of stability, prosperity and sustainable growth. He highlighted the value of strong regional institutions in fostering predictable trade environments and supporting coordinated development efforts. “Open markets, strong institutions and climate-smart development are essential pillars for long-term prosperity and are key to unlocking Africa’s trade potential,” he said.
SG Kapwepwe reaffirmed COMESA’s mandate, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening free trade frameworks and advancing continental cooperation that contribute to sustainable development outcomes, stating: “The continued partnership between COMESA and Sweden reflects our shared commitment to deepening regional integration and advancing sustainable trade across our Member States and build practical frameworks that translate regional integration into tangible development outcomes for our citizens,”.
The meeting further explored areas of mutual interest and potential collaboration, reflecting a shared commitment to constructive partnership, policy dialogue, and knowledge exchange. Both sides recognized the importance of coordinated action in addressing regional challenges and unlocking new opportunities for economic transformation.
